Our First Foster Dog

My husband Gary and I decided we wanted to open our home to a foster dog. We found the organization Duke & Duchess Animal Rescue Society here in Edmonton, Alberta. Maria and David the owners, contacted us within one day to say they had a dog who needed our help. So, Chief arrived on Friday, December 11 and what a beautiful boy he is. Maria said he is probably a Heeler (breed), he comes up to my knees and probably weighs 35-40 pounds. He had never lived indoors before, so we got him on a good week because the temperature here has dropped down drastically. I’m glad he’s inside with us and not out there.

On our first day, Chief was very timid but friendly. He didn’t show any signs of aggression and I haven’t even heard him bark yet. He tried marking the house a few times (and got away with it a couple), but listens very well to us. I do watch him like a hawk but he doesn’t seem to be trying to mark anymore. He follows me all over the house and just lies down wherever I am. Ruby (my one year old Havanese) and Chief get along great, they play a little but are constantly just taking items away from one another. It’s funny to watch, one just waits for the other to be distracted or lose interest then the other will grab the chew stick or toy.

Chief is going into to get neutered tomorrow, so he will be having a very mellow week. Good thing, cause he seems a bit bored not being able to go outside.
